The Luna Oso Flaco are my favourite footwear for any outdoor activity. I use them daily for walking, hiking or even just doing the shopping, and after months of use they barely show any wear. I wholeheartedly recommend them, but use the Luna sizing templates to check your size. You’ll probably be 0.5-1 size *smaller* than your regular US size. One you get the straps fitted, they stay on without any issues, but get the tech-strap for running or walking any distance in water to firmly keep the heel strap in place. These are my first Lunas, but not my last.
Short version: Luna Retro Oso Flaco are great sandals. I'm stoked they're made in the USA. Longer version: I started running in January '21 in 'trail running shoes'. Although those shoes were a half size bigger than my normal size per internet recommendations my toes were rubbing and I was skeptical. The internet led me to running techniques and proper form which then led to running sandals or running barefoot. Immediately I was intrigued: I like being barefoot, running in sandals seemed unconventional and sexy, and then I started learning about running cultures where sandals are normal. It took my legs two months to strengthen and about the same time to figure out good form. (For me, landing flat footed and not too much on the balls of my feet. I was landing on the front on my foot and it led to toe blisters and sore calves and achilles tendons). I also feel like my speed increased a bit without me trying to run faster. I just finished 100 miles in three months and plan to run a half marathon in my fourth month and a full marathon later this year. Running in sandals is enjoyable, especially in the sub-tropics of North Florida--not much swamp socks here!
I bought a pair of Venado’s last year and they’re absolutely the most comfortable thing I’ve ever put on my feet. They’re fantastic for road and beach running, but not very grippy, so I bought the Oso Flaco. I’ve not used them much yet, but already I can tell they’re just as comfortable, but with an excellent grippy sole. My only gripe is that I got a half size up from the venados as they are a little small on me, but the oso flacos I received are exactly the same size as the them. So the sizing seems a little off between models I guess.
I’ve tried other brands like xero and shama and they were less expensive, but the quality and customer support from Luna is worth every penny, not to mention they are made in the USA!
