Worn them every day that I don't have to wear my work shoes. Hiking, running, exploring.. so great. It takes some getting used to the thong strap, most of my other sandals have not been this style, but my feet are getting used to it a lot faster than expected. Normally I wear 7.5-8, so i got 8.5, ended up needing a 9! I have been wearing barefoot shoes for a few years now though, so the toe spread is real!
As a lifelong beach person always found in Rainbows, there have been limitations to that next step up from barefoot. Losing a flipflop on a steep slope full of yucca and cactii in baja, bikepacking, dorsal cramps from running down the sidewalks of Seattle, splashing your own back with mud and wet forest when camping and hiking isn't the way they're supposed to work. Well, Lunas solved all that. The go anywhere comfort and grip are a serious advantage I now enjoy. Definitely use the printout to size your feet. I'm a 10 but needed 8.5s in Luna size. Remember, these aren't shoes. they're very precise technical extensions of your actual feet!
As a sports dietitian specializing in endurance sport fueling I work with a lot of ultra athletes and love race events myself. Everything I do is evidence based it's how we practice..so moving away from science/tech in shoes, insoles, etc was a huge leap for me. I bought my first pair of Lunas, the middle bears, to run trails here in Colorado as a desperate move to solve foot problems. Let's just say I bought a second pair, the winged flaco, to run on road after three weeks in my middle bears on the trails. Running the same trails and road routes I have for 6 years I can actually say the Luna experience has been life changing. It sounds crazy to say but I feel as though I have - better proprioception - rarely catch my foot on roots, rocks - way more nimble - better ankle flexibility on technical terrain - no more neuroma pain after running - can run different lines because foot placement is more accurate - even during downhill I felt more in control I will also say rocks and sand in my shoes is a thing of the past. Totally counter intuitive .... I know!!! But you just shake your foot on the up step and everything clears out. Honestly, I can't say enough about the Luna running experience. Note I have run in Altras for 5 years and came from zero drops. There was little transition time for me. Thanks to the Luna community (people who actually run trail in the sandals) who sent me feedback via instagram about running hard mountain trails in sandals. The awesome folks at Luna actually tagged real people on social to answer my questions. Amazing support and community.
I was trying to choose between the Flaco and the Middle Bear; mainly concerned that the Middle Bear may be too thick and not allow me to use my foot as the cushioning that propels me forward—after all, I want the benefits of being barefoot! I tried the Flaco and it was maybe just a little too hard for me...slightly too much ground feel to use as an everyday go-to-shoe and take it on long hikes. I have my first kid on the way in December and will soon be carrying him around everywhere I go. Then, I tried the Middle Bear...and, just like the three bears fable, it was just right. I have a high amount of ground feel and the footbed has already molded to my foot. It is comfortable and firm; when I go on long walks around my neighborhood with my wife, my feet feel like they just got a strong workout versus flopping around in my old cushy Ecco sandals. I will stick with this thickness regardless of how advanced I get.
